As a son of a professional photographer, Carstens Thies grew up between cameras
and photo-shootings.
He started to take pictures in the exciting early eighties of Berlin. His subjects
were the special East-West situation in Berlin, the art scene and the street
life.
Carsten works as a Boeing 747 captain since many years . His profession allows
him to travel
around the world and take pictures in various places.
When first coming to Alaska in 1995 he felt like coming home. Ever since the
Northcountry has been his playground. In 2003 he became the official photographer
for the Yukon Quest, a thousand mile
sleddog race between Alaska and Canada.
His work is related to a deeper understanding of the relationship between man
and nature in the harsh northern enviroment.
Beside his love for the north, his attention is centered on people and the enviroment
they live and work in. Animals, especially dogs and cats are also often the subject
of his work.
His photos have been published in many magazines and books around the globe.
Als Sohn einer Fotografin wuchs Carsten Thies zwischen Cameras und Fotoshootings
heran. Im Berlin der frühen achtziger Jahre begann er zu fotografieren.
Seine Themen waren die Frontstadt, die Kunstszene und das Leben in den Straßen.
Seit vielen Jahren arbeitet Carsten als Flugkapitän einer Boeing 747. Dieser
Beruf erlaubt es ihm um die Welt zu reisen und Bilder in den verschiedensten
Ländern zu machen.
Als er das erste Mal nach Alaska kam, war es wie nach Hause kommen. Seit dem
Tag
ist das Nordland sein bevorzugtes Arbeitsgebiet. 2003 wurde er zum Offiziellen
Fotografen des Yukon Quest, einem 1600 kilometerlangen Schlittenhunderennen zwischen
Alaska und Kanada.
Seine Arbeit beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit dem Verhältnis zwischen
Mensch und Natur in dem harten, arktischem Lebensraum.
Neben seiner Liebe für den Norden gilt seine besondere Aufmerksamkeit den
Menschen und der Umwelt, in der sie leben und arbeiten. Tiere, insbesondere Hunde
und Katzen sind oft Inhalt seiner Arbeit.
Seine Fotos sind weltweit in vielen Magazinen und Büchern erschienen.
